In the spring of 2025, a new opportunity quietly took root at Malcolm X College, one designed to open doors for students.
The Prepare for Illinois’ Future Powered by Kaplan’s All Access License™ program began as a pilot initiative, offering students free access to more than 30 courses aimed at academic growth and career advancement. Within its first year, 940 Malcolm X College student accounts were created, and 472 users actively enrolled in a total of 632 programs, signaling a strong demand for the learning tools, and all at no cost to the students thanks to Kaplan and the leadership of Malcolm X College.
“By removing financial barriers to elite test prep for our students who might not otherwise be able to afford this tool, we are ensuring student achievement and opening up doors to the possibilities of academic advancement, creating space for our students to raise their hopes and better fulfil career dreams—and their earning potential,” said President David Sanders, Malcolm X College. “When you see the whole picture, you know that this type of no cost access is strengthening families and Chicago and for that, I’m deeply thankful to Kaplan for their partnership.”
The prep courses are offered entirely online, allowing students to learn at their own pace or join live virtual sessions. Whether preparing for exams like the SAT, GRE, or NCLEX, and when exploring fields such as nursing, cybersecurity, or financial planning, the tool provides resources that support their long-term goals.
For many, the program became more than just a study tool.
One student shared, “I never thought I’d be able to afford prep for exams like the GRE, but this program gave me access to everything I needed. It made me feel like my goals were actually possible.”
To date, the initiative has generated an estimated $260,800 in cost savings, easing financial burdens for the students. And amongst the five Illinois community colleges the program is piloted with, Malcolm X College is the leading student enrollment amongst the 2-year institutions.
Behind the scenes, the program’s success reflects a broader commitment to student achievement supported by City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) and the City Colleges of Chicago Foundation, and as part of CCC’s strategic plans (2020 & 2026); and the State of Illinois.
With dedicated contacts available for questions and guidance, and continued funding on the horizon through June 2026 and beyond, the program stands as a powerful example of what can happen when access, opportunity, and support come together.
